The Myth About Small Landscaping Projects
Personally, I think this is a great perspective on landscaping, and the benefits to you and your home value, even if you choose a smaller job. In our industry, we often have clients who think that we only do large jobs, or that a large job is the only way to really transform their home, but that just isn't true!
We recently finished a project for a client in Marin County for a little over $15K that included:
- Clear and grub (removing and disposing all necessary plants, trees, bushes)
- Soil mulching
- Irrigation retrofit
- 3 new trees
- Tree protection on 9 existing trees
- 221 new plants
- 2 flats of ground cover
This tremendous amount of landscaping gave a beautiful facelift to the home, and it was done in just two weeks!
A Small Landscaping Job Does Not Mean Small Results!
It's amazing how a small project, just covering a portion of your property can make a massive difference. Check out these before and after images from a Better Homes and Garden collection.
Some intense color, redwood mulch, and a lattice cover for the AC unit gave a complete facelift to the corner of this lot.
Tract housing - it is no stranger to us here in California! But while the homes may have similar looks and layouts, a simple landscape design like this one will completely set your home apart from others in the neighborhood.
The addition of the spa likely makes this upgrade a little pricey-er, but if the client was to have gone with the pergola, trees, and plantings alone, it still would have completely transformed this backyard into a tropical paradise.
Wow! The transformation on this home is amazing. Now, there are clearly upgrades to the home itself (new windows, paint, etc.), the wild and lush planting makes the house look like an entirely different place. (All images from Better Homes & Gardens)
Another benefit of choosing a small landscape project? The time commitment! You're looking at a real commitment with a medium to large sized project; anywhere from 2-9 months or more, depending on size and complexity. For a small job, like the Marin County project we showed you at the beginning of this post, the average time commitment is closer to 2-3 weeks!
Hopefully this post will give you some ideas for your own home. We would love to hear from any of you that have chosen to go with a smaller landscaping project.
